Good-Bye Summer 2017: How to put together a tablescape!

And so this is it: Summer 2017 is on its last leg! But, hey! Do not despair, Fall is coming and with it, the foliage, apple cider, the Jack-O-Lanterns … Oh, I LOVE Fall!

And even though I’m a Fall aficionado, this Summer was amazing and it’s my duty to let it go out with a bang! Last week I wrote 6 wonderful people on Instagram who put together the most gorgeous tablescapes! They are professionals, do a wonderful job, are the ones from whom I gather inspiration every time I need to entertain!

Today, we’re paying homage to Summer and putting together a gorgeous – at least I think it is! ;o) – tablescape!

1. CHOOSE A THEME

The first thing you want to do is choose a theme: It could be anything! An occasion (Halloween); a tv character (Carrie Bradshaw); or even a color (pink)! LOL – I have chosen, as the theme of this post gives away: SUMMER. A theme will help you organize your thoughts and start putting together the elements you’ll need. This is my inspiration (A tropical paradise in Palm Springs)

2. IS IT FORMAL, INFORMAL?

If you know where you’re going, it’s easier to get there: do not polish the silver if you’re serving burgers… easy peasy, right? So tonight, we’re dining SEMI-FORMALLY (is that a thing?!?) :oD

3. CHOOSE A COLOR SCHEME

Color is one of the most powerful elements in Design. It’s an element of visual language that people process before they are consciously aware of it. It conveys emotion, supports the message in the design, and has the ability to transport you to a completely different place. Your color scheme can make or break your tablescape! My choices:

Remember my inspiration on Item 1? These colors evoke that feeling, don’t they?

4. CHOOSE THE ELEMENTS OF YOUR TABLESCAPE:

a) HOW ARE YOU GOING TO DRESS YOUR TABLE?

A tablecloth? Placemats? Are you using chargers? What about the napkins? These are important choices. Dressing your table is like choosing an outfit (and no one wants to go to the Opera wearing flip-flops, right?)

My choices:

Tommy Bahama Banana Leaf Placemats

b) A CENTERPIECE:

It could be flowers, candles, a soup tureen. In my case, I chose pineapples (is there anything more tropical than pineapples? ), Chinoiserie vases, and boxwood.

c) PLATES, GLASSES, AND FLATWARE

We’re getting there… a few more choices and we’ll be ready to go!

5. PUT IT ALL TOGETHER AND ENJOY!

I love this diagram from All in Good Taste by Kate Spade NY – Everyone who likes to entertain should have this book! There are some variations to how you set up a table, but the essentials are all here… and here’s my table!
